I want to talk about how much time we spend alone with God. (Our God Time) Let’s take a look at a few things. Do you have devotions? Morning devotions? Bedtime devotions? How much time do we spend talking to God? Are you listening for God?
What are devotions? Webster defines devotions as – “an act of prayer or private worship” or, “a religious exercise or practice other than the regular corporate worship of a congregation.” In other words… It’s your time you devote to and spend time with God. We see Jesus having devotions many times in the New Testament. We find in Luke 5:16 “But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.” So even Jesus needed to have devotions with God. Remember that prayer is just a two way conversation with god and Yourself.
Do you start your day off with a Devotion to God? If you want to have a great day there’s nothing more powerful than starting your day with God. Having morning devotion will set your tone for the rest of the day. In Psalms 143 verse 8 says “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” So if you want to have a great day start your day with Devotions to God. This does not mean you will not have trouble or challenges for the day… it just means that God is there to help you.
Another time that a lot of people have devotions is right before they go to bed. This is a great time to thank God for what He has done for you that day. I also thank him for just getting me through the day. In Proverbs 3:24 says “When you lie down, you will not be afraid, When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” Spending time with God will always bring and give you peace.
Your personal devotion should include talking with God or prayer, reading scriptures(Bible). There are a lot of resources to help with your devotions. Both online and printed you can find devotional books or daily Bible verses to use.
In conclusion I cannot stress enough the importance each day spending time with the Lord. Sometimes it’s hard to find time, but once you get into the habit it becomes a very easy routine. I challenge you to do a morning devotion asking God to help you through the day and an evening devotion thanking God for helping you that day. If you want to do more God Time that’s great… but I would suggest at least one devotional time a day. Remember that time we give to God is the only gift that we can give to God that he doesn’t already have. May God bless!
