Fear…

Magnificent Promises

This week I would like to talk a little about fear.  This simple four letter word can be very complex and powerful.  So what is fear exactly? Fear is a natural, powerful, unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

There are some good things caused by Fear.  Fear alerts us to the presence of danger or the threat of harm.  Example – You are hiking in the woods and you see a bear crossing the path. Fear makes you stop and rethink your route.  I think back to the time I was saved,  I was at a revival and the Minister preached on going to Hell.  The fear of Hell changed my life forever.  Just like the hiker I re-evaluated my walk in life. It says in Job 28:28, “…Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,  And to depart from evil is understanding.’

There are many times where Fear is not good or healthy for us.  When our fears and anxieties start controlling our life we have a problem.  Going back to the bear example, If we quit hiking because we might come across a bear, That fear has become a problem.

Let’s look at some of the fears that could affect our Christian lives. We deal with fear that can be both physical or psychological.  There are a lot of different fears, but let’s look at a couple a Christian might face.

  • First – The fear of witnessing and testifying.  God commands us to tell others about His grace and salvation. In the beginnings of the church we find this in Acts 5:24, “And daily in the temple, and in every house,  they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” I think we don’t witness because we fear being ridiculed and not being accepted.

  • Second – Teaching or public speaking.  This kind of ties into the above witnessing.  There’s a real fear of standing in front of others and talking.  I think the biggest fear here is the Fear of failure.  In 2 Corinthians 12:9 tells us,  “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness…”  By trusting God our weakness becomes His strength.

  • Third –  The fear I want to talk about is the Fear of dying. It has been said there are only two things in life we can count on.   That is Death and Taxes.  Everyone is going to die.  That is a fact of life.  But death is not the end.  Hebrews 9:27 says this, “ And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.”  If you have a fear of dying take comfort that there is life after death.

  • Last – The fear of where you will spend eternity.  What we do now affects where we will spend eternity.  You can choose Heaven or Hell.  My Friend, maybe your fear is that you are not sure where you will spend your eternity.  Or maybe you think it will be Heaven… but there is some doubt.

It’s time to put that fear away for good. John 5:24 says, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.  Simple plan… Hear & Believe. Notice it didn’t say May not come to judgement… But says Shall Not” come to judgement.

My question to you… do you know where you are going to spend eternity?  Maybe you have never believed in God.  Or maybe you have believed in God, but this world with all of its cares has started to fill those places that God once had and put some doubt in your life.  If this sounds like you, it’s time to put things in order.  There is no better time than now.

Please… if you don’t know Christ or have fallen away please pray… Tell God you believe His Son Jesus paid for your sins and rose again. Tell God you are sorry and want to start Living for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes and give you Everlasting Life with Him… and place His Spirit deep within your heart. In 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
