Wow! Where has this year gone? It seems like summer just started. The school buses are rolling, and the kids are back in school. So, this week I would like to talk about your child or maybe your grandchild’s education.
A child’s education starts at home and continues through college. In fact, even at my age, I’m still learning every day. I guess we never really stop learning. But let’s take a closer look at early childhood learning.
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old, he will not depart from it.“
Have you ever stopped and thought about what we are teaching our children? Our children are like sponges taking in information from all sources they come in contact with. So, do you know what or who is influencing (teaching) your children?
Sometimes we are so busy with life that we haven’t taken the time needed to find out the things that are being taught. The Covid quarantines brought to light some of the things being taught by our schools. Things like critical race theory, gender identity, and alternative lifestyles. We either teach our children or we let the world teach them.
You may disagree with me on some of these items, but I’m looking at them from a biblical Standpoint. Acceptance of alternative lifestyles is being taught. The bible teaches us this is an abomination to God. In Leviticus 18:22 says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.”
The Bible teaches us to love all people. This doesn’t mean we have to accept or approve of their lifestyles. Think about how your children are being taught that these lifestyles are normal. The schools, government, TV and even in some Churches teach tolerance and acceptances of these sinful lifestyles. Have you ever thought about how many television shows today has a gay or lesbian couple on them? Do you think this influences your child? What once wasn’t accepted is now Okay. Do you think God has suddenly changed his mind about these lifestyles? Of course not.
Now let us ponder this, sexual activities and profanity is found on most television shows today. It’s really hard to find a show that doesn’t contain either of these in its content. When children see these things, they feel it’s okay to imitate their Idols on TV. Our children today are having sex at a much younger age than ever before. Now our schools are teaching a child about sex and birth control in the first and second grades in school. Even the Girls Scouts teach a child about abortion.
The other day, while in a store, I heard a very young child… maybe 6 or 7 years old, using profanity because his mother would not buy him something. It’s hard to believe that a child that young is cursing at his parents. We are seeing children who have just learned to speak using the Lord in vain. Some parents think that is cute and funny. But always remember that your child’s behavior is taught mostly by imitating their parents’ behavior. Question… Are you as a parent, monitoring what your child watches on TV, their music, what they watch on the internet, or even the content of video games? These are some of the things we can control.
What about critical race theory? Our kids are being taught because they were born white, you are a bad person because your ancestors supported slavery and held back opportunities to other races.
Then there’s gender identity. Do you really think a child 5 years old can make life changing decisions? If they’re that mature, let them drive a car or serve in the military. Let us be real… That’s totally crazy. These things are being taught by our school systems today. Please take actions by attending school board meetings, PTA, and any other activities that affects your child in school.
Finally, one more item to speak on, Respect. Today’s society has become a self-serving society. I want it! I need it! I deserve It! No matter what it takes or who’s in my way, I must have it. There is little or no respect for each other as long as I get my way. The Bible says to treat others as you would want to be treated. In Matthew 7:12 “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” What are we teaching our children in the home? Do your children respect you or do you let them do what they want because it avoids conflict. Respect starts at home.
So, what’s the answer! Start teaching your children at home. Deuteronomy 11:19 tells us, “You shall teach (God’s Law) them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
Start monitoring what your child is exposed to, television, music, games, and internet. When there is a gay or lesbian scene, take this opportunity to teach what God says about it. Discuss with your child your beliefs in God and what God thinks about what you just saw. Also, when there’s a suggestive sexual activity on a TV or movie, discuss it with your child. This also is an opportunity for your child to understand this is wrong in the sight of God. Psalms 34:11, “Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord“.
In closing, you have two choices on teaching a child. You can let the world teach them, of course they learn the ways of the world. Or you can take control of teaching your child. Teach them God’s ways, teach them the bible, teach them what’s good and what’s evil and teach them respect.
So, here’s the Final Question, are you ready to teach? To teach effectively, you will need a relationship with God. How is your relationship with Him? Maybe you never had a relationship with Jesus, or maybe you have lost your fellowship with Him. There’s no better time than the present to get a relationship with God or to renew your relationship with Him. Please just take a moment right now and dedicate yourself to Christ Our Savior. It’s easy and free. All you need to do is ask the Lord to come into your life. Your kids deserve to be taught the truth that comes from God.
Please… if you don’t know Christ or have fallen away, please pray… Tell God you believe His Son Jesus paid for your sins and rose again. Tell God you are sorry and want to start Living for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes and give you Everlasting Life with Him… and place His Spirit deep within your heart. In 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
You might be very surprised first of all about what your child already knows. If you discuss these things with them, you will open up channels of communication that can last a lifetime. Being honest with your child and discussing God with them will bring a lifetime of blessing.
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” 3 John 1:4
