Today we are bombarded by ads to buy…. When you turn on the television or radio, you hear commercial after commercial about products. Products like cars, carpet, new bathrooms, and services like remodeling, repair & legal are just some of the few. That’s not to forget that info commercial that’s a half-hour long talking about the brand new, one of a kind and that you can’t live without cookware set. They are selling things that we are told “we just can’t live without”… Or maybe I should say, they try to convince us that we can’t live without it. Don’t worry about the cost… we’ve got you covered with easy credit, and everyone’s approved for financing. Nothing down with 6 easy payments of $19.99.
Today, I would like to speak a little about material possessions. Some people are so obsessed about material possessions that nothing else matters. There’s an old adage about keeping up with the Joneses… I gotta have more, better and bigger things than my neighbor. Don’t get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with material things. It is only when you get obsessed by material possessions that they become a problem. In Matthew 6:21 we find, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” So, if you are living your life for material possessions, they become a God to you.
Maybe you have heard the phrase, “Whoever dies with the most toys, Wins!” I been looking for the Bible Verse that talks about taking a U Haul truck full of our possessions to Heaven. But I haven’t been able to find it in my Bible. I don’t think we will need to pack a bag as we will not be taking much with us when we die. In Mark 8:36 Jesus said, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” It doesn’t matter how much you have in this world. We are not taking material possessions with us to the hereafter.
In Colossians 1:16 we find this verse, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”. So, God created ALL things! The things that we have in our possession all belong to God. These things are being loaned to us by a gracious God. Because these material possessions are on loan… they remain God’s property.
Each day when we pray to God, we need to thank Him for the things that he has loaned us in this life. As for myself, he has definitely blessed me with His material possessions, to help me in this world. Do I have everything I want? No, But God has supplied everything I need and a whole lot more. Psalm 37:4 tells us to “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” We are told to Delight ourselves in the Lord. That is to exalt Him so highly that we pursue Him over and above any other person, thing, thought, or action in our lives. When we do this… God will give us the desires of our heart.
My question to you is this… Are the material possessions in your life your God? Are you only motivated by getting ahead by owning material possessions? What or Who are you working for? Is it yourself, your family or your God?
Some really tough questions. You might say I believe in God, but do you really trust Him? My friends it’s easy to get caught up in the world and start working and walking with the world. Maybe… it’s time to get back to walking with the Lord. There’s no better time than the present to get right with God. In 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Salvation is only a prayer away. It’s free, it’s easy and you don’t even need a credit card. Just ask God to Forgive and to come into your life.
Please pray… Tell God you believe His Son Jesus paid for your sins and arose from the grave. Tell God you are sorry and want to start Living for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes and give you Everlasting Life with Him… and place His Spirit deep within your heart. Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;“
Let us always give God thanks for loaning us all the material possessions He gives us.
May God Bless you!
