Who is God?

Who/What is your god?

This week as I was thinking about a recent Sunday School lesson on who is God, I would like to share a few thoughts on the subject.  Everyone serves a god. So, who is your god?

Basically, your god is anything or anyone you put first in your life. Some people put work, family, friends, alcohol, smoking, sex, food, home, pets and many more things first in their lives.  You probably know a person that put their job in front of all other things. We call them a workaholic. Or maybe a parent that pushes their child to excel in sports or academics so much that nothing else matters. There’s nothing wrong with pushing a child to achieve, but when it becomes an obsession, it becomes a god.

In Deuteronomy 6:5 we find this, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” In other words, put God first in ALL things!

In today’s society, people are searching for something to bring satisfaction to their life. We have a build in need for something to satisfy and we search for what gives us joy, happiness, and fulfillment. We try to satisfy this desire in many ways.  Some people may try, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc… or others bury themselves in work, hobbies, or making money just to name a few. Yes, we can find temporary happiness in things of this earth. But this is only temporary! How many times do we read about the person that seems to have everything life has to offer commit suicide?  Think about a movie star that has fame, money, a mansion, servants, and much more. They are not satisfied with their life and decide it’s better to be dead. In 1 John 2:15-17 says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. We know we need something; we try to search the world, but it seems to be very elusive and hard to find anything that will satisfy our desires.

Here’s the question. What is your god or who is your god? If the desire of your heart is for worldly things such as alcohol, money, fame, or sexual desires then these things are your God. To find true happiness and contentment, we need to turn to God and make him first in your life. When you stop chasing the things of the world and turn to the Lord Jesus, you will find more happiness, satisfaction and contentment than anything in this world can bring you.

Some of us try to walk a tight rope trying to stay in the world (Serving worldly desires) while trying to serve God. In Luke 16:13 we find, “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Please, take a look at your life.  You can’t serve both. Are you serving the world or are you serving God?  Maybe you have served God, but over time the world has slowly crept back into your life?  What’s your number one priority?  Is God number one in your life or is it something else? In Matthew 22:37 says, “Jesus said unto them “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart all thy soul and with all thy mind.

So, here’s the Final Question, how’s your relationship with God? Maybe you never had a relationship with Jesus, or maybe you have lost your fellowship with Him. There’s no better time than the present to get a relationship with God or to renew your relationship with Him. Remember, none of us is guaranteed another second on this earth. Please just take a moment right now and dedicate yourself to Christ Our Savior.

So, I ask you today who/what is your god?  If God is not the top priority in your life, ask him today to take control of your heart. It’s easy and free. All you need to do is ask the Lord to come into your life. Please… if you don’t know Christ or have fallen away, please pray… Tell God you believe His Son Jesus paid for your sins and rose again. Tell God you are sorry and want to start Living for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes and give you Everlasting Life with Him… and place His Spirit deep within your heart. In 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
