“Born again.” Those two words are familiar to many people who have spent time around Christianity. We hear them in sermons, songs, testimonies, and conversations about salvation. But what does it really mean to be born again?
The phrase comes directly from the words of Jesus Christ. In John 3, a religious leader named Nicodemus came to Jesus by night. Nicodemus was a respected man who knew the Scriptures and practiced religion, yet Jesus told him something that must have shocked him: “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
Jesus was not talking about being physically born a second time. He was speaking about a spiritual birth… a work of God that changes a person from the inside out.
We Are All in Need of a New Birth
The Bible teaches that every person is a sinner. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Sin has separated mankind from a holy God. We may try to improve ourselves, become more religious, do good things, attend church, give money, or help others. These things may be good, but they cannot remove our sin or give us spiritual life.
Being born again is not simply becoming a better person. It is not turning over a new leaf or deciding to live a more respectable life. It is receiving new life from God. Religion can change a person’s habits, but only God can change a person’s heart.
Being Born Again Is Through Jesus Christ
The new birth is made possible through Jesus Christ. Jesus did not come merely to give us a better philosophy for living. He came to save us from our sins.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” John 14:6
Salvation is not found in our goodness. It is found in Christ.
Jesus willingly went to the cross, bearing the punishment for our sins. He died, was buried, and rose again. When we place our faith in Him, trusting Him as our Lord and Saviour, we receive forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
John 3:16 reminds us of the heart of the Gospel: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…” God’s love provided what our sin could never provide—salvation.
What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
To be born again means that God gives spiritual life to someone who was spiritually separated from Him. The Holy Spirit begins a work of transformation within that person.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”
Notice that Scripture says a new creature.
Being born again does not mean that a Christian will never struggle again. Christians still face temptation, weakness, failure, and spiritual battles. But something fundamental has changed. There is now a new desire to know God, follow Christ, obey His Word, and turn away from sin. The direction of the life begins to change because the heart has been changed.
How Can a Person Be Born Again?
First, we must recognize our need for a Saviour. We cannot save ourselves.
Second, we must believe in Jesus Christ. Salvation begins with trusting Him rather than trusting ourselves.
Third, we must confess our sins. First John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”
Fourth, we must repent. Repentance means turning from sin and turning toward God. It is more than feeling sorry; it involves a change of heart and direction.
Finally, we surrender ourselves to Christ and trust Him for salvation. The Holy Spirit begins His work within us, leading us toward spiritual growth and Christlikeness.
The New Birth Begins a New Life
Being born again is not the end of the Christian journey. It is the beginning. Romans 12:2 teaches us to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind” God continues to work in the believer, shaping attitudes, desires, priorities, and actions.
The question is not simply, “Have I prayed a prayer?” The deeper question is, “Has Christ changed my life?” Church attendance cannot make us born again. Baptism cannot make us born again. Being raised in a Christian home cannot make us born again. Even knowing the Bible is not the same as knowing Christ.
Jesus said, “Ye must be born again” John 3:7 That is not merely a suggestion. It is a spiritual necessity. The Christian life does not begin when we become more religious. It begins when we become spiritually alive through Jesus Christ. That is what it means to be born again.
If you have never truly trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, today is the day to consider where you stand with God. Recognize your sin. Believe on Christ. Repent and turn to Him. Trust His finished work on the cross.
There’s no better time than now to be born again. All you need is to take a moment to pray… Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes, give you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep within your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;“
