Asleep…

Awakening the Spirit: A Call to Active Faith

It’s amazing to see some churches, who are full of life and excited about our Lord, while other churches are looking like a graveyard. Remember the Church is the people and not the building itself. It seems there is little, or no excitement and many believers have fallen asleep. Let’s look at the concept of being a “spiritually asleep” Christian.

So, what does the term “spiritually asleep” refer to? It a state in which one’s faith remains dormant and passive. This condition is characterized by a lack of engagement with spiritual matters, apathy towards one’s Christian duties, and an overall disconnect from God.

In the book of Romans, the apostle Paul addresses the need for a vibrant faith in action: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Paul’s words encourage us to break free from a worldly mindset and awaken our spiritual senses.

One of the most significant signs of spiritual sleep is the absence of fruit in our lives. In the Gospel of John, Jesus imparts a powerful message: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 NKJV). This verse reminds us that faith without action is like a branch severed from the vine; it cannot produce fruit. It emphasizes the essential connection between faith and deeds, challenging us to be active in our walk with Christ.

The Bible also warns against being lukewarm in our faith. In the book of Revelation, Jesus says, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.  So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16, NKJV). This vivid imagery shows the Lord’s displeasure with a passive, indifferent faith. He desires a passionate and active commitment from His believers.

The apostle James addresses the critical relationship between faith and deeds in his epistle: “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?” (James 2:14, NKJV). James emphasizes that faith must be accompanied by actions, as genuine faith naturally leads to a life filled with good works. Faith without action is essentially lifeless.

To awaken from spiritual slumber and put our faith into action, we must cultivate a deeper connection with God through prayer, worship, and the study of His Word. This spiritual awakening is described in Ephesians 5:14: “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” This verse encourages us to shake off the drowsiness of inaction and let the light of Christ shine in and through us.

In closing, Faith without works is dead… But understand this, Works can NOT save you or get you to Heaven.  Works are the results of our faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” We can’t work our way to Heaven.

In conclusion, we need to have a heart check here.  Are we “spiritually asleep”? The Bible urges us to align our faith with action, bearing fruit, and being passionate in our commitment to Christ. So let us wake up from our spiritual slumber, renew our commitment, and allow our faith to shine through our actions, fulfilling our calling as active and vibrant followers of Christ. It all starts with a relationship.

So how is your relationship? Do you have fruit? Maybe you have never had a relationship with God or maybe it’s not as good as it should be. Please take the time right now to get a personal relationship with Him. Tomorrow may be too late.

Please… if you don’t know Christ or have fallen away, please pray… Tell God you believe His Son Jesus paid for your sins on the cross and then raised Him from the dead. Tell God you are sorry and want to start Living for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes and give you Everlasting Life with Him… and place His Spirit deep within your heart. In 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and in Romans 10:9 tells us. ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
