If something went wrong with your heart, would you know it? The CDC reports that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, often striking without warning. Because physical heart conditions can be silent killers, we are taught to monitor our habits and visit a doctor at the first sign of trouble.
But what about your spiritual heart? A spiritual heart condition can be just as silent, tracking beneath the surface of a busy life while slowly cutting off your spiritual vitality. If you don’t intentionally check your vitals, you can live for years with a failing heart and never realize it until a crisis hits. By looking at scripture, we can evaluate our spiritual health and identify the symptoms of a spiritual heart condition.
Symptom 1: Misplaced Treasures… The first diagnostic test for your spiritual heart is a look at your investments. In Luke 12:34, Jesus states a foundational reality: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Your heart naturally follows your time, your money, and your energy. To diagnose this symptom, take an honest look at your daily routines and your financial habits. What are you ultimately working for? Are you consuming all your resources to build a comfortable, temporary kingdom on earth, or are you investing in the eternal kingdom of God? If your thoughts, calendar, and resources are completely dominated by worldly security and material gain, your heart has drifted. A heart that is wrapped up entirely in the temporary things of this world is a major warning sign of an underlying spiritual heart condition.
Symptom 2: Defiled Speech and Thoughts… The second symptom is found in the way you speak and think. Matthew 15:18–19 reveals the direct pipeline between our internal world and our external expressions: “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”
We often try to excuse our bad attitudes or sharp words by saying, “I didn’t mean that,” or “I’m just stressed.” But biblical truth tells us that our words simply reveal what is already hiding in the corners of our souls. Listen to yourself closely when you are talking casually with friends, family, or coworkers. Consider how you speak when you are angry or driving in heavy traffic. If Jesus Christ were standing visibly next to you, would your vocabulary and tone change? If your speech is filled with gossip, negativity, bitterness, or deceit, it is a clear indicator that your spiritual heart needs direct intervention.
Symptom 3: Empty Lip Service… The third symptom is the presence of routine without relationship. You might find it increasingly difficult to pray, to tithe, to serve, or to attend church, feeling as though you are dragging yourself through obligations rather than acting out of love. In Matthew 15:8, Jesus diagnoses this exact condition: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”
It is entirely possible to go through the motions of a religious life while your heart remains completely detached. You can sing the songs, sit in the pews, and say the right words to maintain a spiritual appearance for the people around you, but God looks directly at the heart. Giving God empty lip service while harboring a cold, indifferent spirit is a dangerous symptom of spiritual decay.
The Final Warning: A Weighted Heart… In Luke 21:34–36, we are given a critical warning about the subtle ways the world numbs our spiritual sensitivity: “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
The distractions of this life—ranging from overt indulgence to the simple, daily anxieties of modern living—act like plaque in our spiritual arteries. They weigh the heart down, making it heavy, sluggish, and unresponsive to the Holy Spirit.
Where does this leave you today? If you are honest with yourself, you might realize that your spiritual heart is failing. Maybe you have been building your own kingdom instead of God’s. Maybe your words have been defiled, or you have been offering Him nothing but empty lip service, pretending everything is fine on the outside while dying on the inside.
The baseline truth is that you cannot fix a broken spiritual heart on your own. You need a transfusion. You need the Great Physician. Right now, wherever you are reading this, consider this your invitation to heal your heart. You don’t have to wait for a church service to respond to God. The Holy Spirit is drawing you right now.
If you have never given your life to Jesus Christ, or if you have backslidden and your heart has grown cold and far from Him, this moment is for you. Scripture tells us in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.“
Take a moment right now to bow your head, humble your spirit, and meet God at the altar of your heart. Repent of the drift. Confess the misplaced treasures, the defiled words, and the empty religious routines. Surrender control. Stop trying to patch up your life with temporary fixes and lay your burdens at His feet. Ask for a new heart. Cry out to God to create in you a clean heart and renew a right spirit within you.
Do not let this day catch you like a trap. Do not walk away from this message and ignore the symptoms any longer. The Lord is standing with open arms, ready to heal you, forgive you, and give you a brand-new heart. Step forward and respond to Him today.
May God Bless you. Bob
