This week’s focus is on the temptations we all face. Once we accept Christ as our Savior, a spiritual battle begins. James 1:14-15 says “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” But every man is tempted… Satan pulls out all the stops to lure us back into our old sinful ways. So how do we deal with the temptations of this world?
Let’s look at how Jesus faced temptation. Then Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, was led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. When the tempter came to Him, our Saviour did not rely on the wisdom of men, but did wield the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
To every temptation, He answered with authority: “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). When the enemy sought to move Him to pride or false worship, He rebuked him again, saying, “Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Luke 4:8). Leaning on God’s Word and strength, Jesus overcame temptation. By this, He set an example for us, that through the scriptures we might have hope and the power to resist the attacks of the devil.
As humans, we all deal with temptation in one form or another. It might be the urge to eat junk food, put things off, or do something that goes against our Christian values. For Christians, temptation often has a deeper, spiritual side, bringing the challenge of staying faithful to their beliefs and steering clear of sinful actions.
The Bible is packed with stories of people facing temptation, offering plenty of lessons to learn. One of the most famous is the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. In it the serpent convinces Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge, even though God had commanded them not to. She gives in and takes a bite, then persuades Adam to do the same. Because of their disobedience, they’re banished from the garden and face the consequences of their choices.
This story shows that resisting temptation can be tough, even for those close to God, and that giving in comes with consequences. For Christians, it highlights the importance of following God’s commands and staying strong against the urge to sin.
Christians handle temptation by recognizing it as a normal part of life that everyone faces. While they’re not immune to it, they’re encouraged to stand firm and resist. Even Jesus experienced temptation during his time on earth, yet he remained steadfast and never sinned.
One way to resist temptation is through prayer. It’s a powerful tool that lets us talk to God and ask for His help when we’re struggling. We can pray for strength, wisdom, and guidance to face temptation head-on. By turning to God in prayer, we can find the courage and willpower to resist its pull.
Another way to resist temptation is by staying connected to your faith community. We’re not meant to live in isolation, but to be part of a group of believers. Being involved in a church allows us to support and encourage each other when temptation comes our way. We can pray together, share our struggles, and hold each other accountable.
Along with prayer and community, we can resist temptation by keeping our attention on our values and beliefs. We believe we’re called to live in a way that pleases God and reflects our faith, which means steering clear of actions such as lying, cheating, or stealing. Staying true to our Christian values helps us turn away from sinful behavior.
Christians should be mindful of their weaknesses and take steps to steer clear of situations that might lead to temptation. For instance, someone dealing with alcohol addiction might choose to avoid places where alcohol is served, while someone struggling with pornography addiction could use filters on their devices and stay away from triggering websites. By recognizing their vulnerabilities and actively working to avoid temptation, they can guard themselves against falling into sin.
We can handle temptation by remembering we’re never alone. The Bible says God is always with us and will never leave or abandon us. When temptation comes, we can lean on Him for strength and guidance, trusting that He’s on our side and will help us resist.
In conclusion, temptation is a challenge that all Christians face. However, by staying connected to our faith, praying for strength and guidance, staying focused on their values, and avoiding situations that may lead to temptation, we can resist the lure of sin. While we may stumble and fall at times, we can trust that God is always with us.
We can’t resist the temptations of the world without the help of our Lord. So, here’s a question: how’s your relationship with God? Does it need a little work? If it does, take a moment now to talk to Him. Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins, grant you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep in your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved“
