In a quiet valley, there lived a small, golden wheat seed. It spent its days safe inside a warm, beautiful burlap sack in the master’s barn. The seed was proud of its smooth outer shell and loved its comfortable life, high above the damp, cold earth.
One crisp autumn morning, the Master arrived. He reached into the sack, scooped up the golden seed, and carried it out into the dark, freshly plowed field. The seed began to tremble.
It watched as the Master dug a deep furrow in the dirt.”Master, what are you doing?” the seed cried out. “If you put me in the dark ground, I will lose my beautiful golden shell. It will decay. I will smother. It will be the end of me!
“The Master looked down at the tiny seed with eyes full of deep affection. “My little one,” the Master whispered, “if you stay in the safety of the sack, you will remain comfortable, but you will always be alone. Your shell is not your destiny; it is just your package. Trust me. To truly live, you must first die.” With gentle hands, the Master laid the seed into the cold, dark earth and covered it over.
To the seed, the darkness felt absolute. The cold ground began to press in. Slowly, painfully, its outer shell cracked open and began to wither away. Everything the seed had known about itself—its beauty, its comfort, its boundaries—was completely undone. It felt like the end of all things.
But in the very moment the old shell completely gave way, something miraculous happened. From the heart of the dying seed, a tiny green shoot began to reach upward. Nourished by the very soil that buried it, it broke through the dark earth into the brilliant warmth of the spring sun.
It grew taller and stronger than the little seed could have ever imagined. By the time harvest arrived, the single, lonely seed had transformed into a towering, fruitful stalk, yielding a hundred new seeds to feed the hungry world. It had lost its tiny, selfish life in the dark, only to find a glorious, eternal life in the sun.
The little seed thought the Master was burying it, but in reality, the Master was planting it. What looked like an ending was really the beginning of a greater life.
Many people spend their lives protecting the shell of pride, comfort, success, or self-will. Yet as long as the seed remains in the sack, it can never fulfill the purpose for which it was created. The same is true for us. God never asks us to die to ourselves to destroy us—He asks us to surrender so He can transform us.
Jesus Himself declared: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.“John 12:24. The cross looked like defeat, but it became the greatest victory the world has ever known. Christ died, was buried, and rose again so that all who trust Him might have everlasting life.
The Apostle Paul testified: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.“Galatians 2:20 When we surrender our will, our pride, our sins, and our plans to Christ, we are not losing our life—we are finding it.
Jesus promised: “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.“John 12:25.
Perhaps today God is asking you to let go of the shell you’ve been protecting. It may be a cherished sin, an unforgiving spirit, fear of the future, or simply trying to live life on your own terms. Whatever it is, remember this: the Master knows exactly what He is doing.
The seed never imagined that beneath the soil was the beginning of a harvest. In the same way, God sees beyond today’s surrender to tomorrow’s fruitfulness. So don’t fear the Master’s hand. Trust Him.
For the same Savior who calls us to die with Him also promises us life with Him. “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.“Romans 6:5.
Will you remain safely in the sack, alone and unchanged? Or will you place your life into the hands of the Master, trusting Him to produce a harvest that will glorify Him for eternity? The choice is yours. The Master is waiting. And the harvest is greater than you could ever imagine.
There’s no better time than now to start living as if it were your last day on earth. All you need is to take a moment to pray… Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes, give you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep within your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;“
