The kitchen table was buried under a fortress of unpaid medical bills and eviction notices. David sat with his head in his hands, staring at the worn linoleum floor. His wife, Sarah, sat across from him, her eyes red from crying. Beside them sat a longtime family friend Mark, an elder from their local church.
“I don’t understand,” David whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion. “Where is God when I need Him? Why doesn’t He answer my prayer? Why does He let me continue to suffer like this? I pray every single night for this financial burden to lift, but it only gets worse.”
Sarah reached over, covering David’s trembling hand with her own. “I’ve asked myself the same thing, David. It feels like our prayers are just bouncing off the ceiling.”
Marcus listened quietly, his face filled with deep empathy. He knew the agony of a silent heaven. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his worn leather Bible.
“David, Sarah, it is completely natural to feel overwhelmed when the storm rages,” Mark said gently. “But we must examine our hearts when we feel God is silent. Each of us faces seemingly impossible mountains, but sometimes the obstacle isn’t the mountain itself—it is the doubt in our own hearts.”
Marcus opened the Scriptures. “The Lord Jesus spoke directly to this in Matthew 17:20. The Scripture saith, ‘And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.“
David looked up, a defensive shadow crossing his face. “Are you saying I don’t have faith, Mark? I believe God exists.”
“Believing He exists and fully trusting Him with the outcome are two different things,” Mark explained kindly. “We find it easy to believe God will answer us when we ask for the small things. But when a major crisis hits, we tend to doubt it will really happen. We treat the Creator of all things as if a financial breakthrough is too difficult for Him. In Matthew 21:22, Christ promises, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” The key word is believing. Have you truly let go and let God have total control, or are you still trying to carry the weight yourself?”
Sarah sighed softly. “I know my motivations haven’t always been right. Sometimes I just pray for a quick exit from the pain, rather than asking what God wants to teach us through this.”
Mark nodded, turning a few pages in his Bible. “That is another critical truth. Sometimes God says ‘no’ or ‘wait’ because our motives are misaligned with His will. James 4:3 warns us, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.” God knows our hearts completely. Sometimes His unanswered prayers are actually His greatest protection, keeping us from things that would ultimately harm our walk with Him.”
David let out a long breath, the tension slowly leaving his shoulders. He looked at the stacks of bills, then back at Mark. “I’ve been so angry at the silence that I haven’t actually examined my own heart. My relationship with the Lord has taken a backseat to my worry.”
“If you want to move those mountains, it’s time to examine that relationship,” Mark said, placing a hand on David’s shoulder. “Rest assured, if you have a personal relationship with Christ, He hears every word. But He wants your heart, not just your list of demands.”
Together, the three of them bowed their heads. For the first time in months, David didn’t pray for a sudden windfall of money. Instead, he prayed for a mustard seed of true faith, surrendering his fears, his pride, and his family’s future entirely into the hands of the Savior.
Does this sound like your life? God promised that He would never leave or forsake us, and we can rely on Him for help in our times of need. All we have to do is ask.
There’s no better time than now to start living as if it were your last day on earth. All you need is to take a moment to pray… Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes, give you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep within your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;“
