This year is flying by incredibly fast! Next week, on Monday, we celebrate the Labor Day holiday. With that long weekend just around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to look at the history, some interesting facts, and what the Bible teaches us about the true meaning of labor.
According to historical records, Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors and recognizes the American labor movement, as well as the invaluable contributions that workers have made to the development, strength, and achievements of our nation.
To give you a snapshot of where we stand today, here are some eye-opening facts about Labor Day and American workforce trends in 2026:
1894– The year Congress officially made Labor Day a federal holiday.
40%– The portion of U.S. workers who belonged to a labor union in the 1950s (which has since dropped to around 10%).
56%– The percentage of Americans who plan to host or attend a barbecue over the holiday weekend.
53% – The number of holiday travelers who plan to reach their destinations by car.
818 – The staggering number of hot dogs consumed every single second in the U.S. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
$864 – The average family’s back-to-school expenses per child this season.
$83,730– The recent median U.S. household income.
55%– The percentage of Americans who do not use all of their hard-earned paid time off, resulting in roughly 768 million unused vacation days across the country.
28 million– The number of Americans who currently do not receive paid vacations or holidays at all.
Much like Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, Labor Day signals its traditional end—even if the warm weather says otherwise. Holiday sales, backyard barbecues, and final summer road trips usually rule the weekend, while children brace themselves for the reality of the new school year.
For sports fans, Labor Day weekend means baseball’s pennant races are heating up for the final stretch, tennis enthusiasts are glued to the final days of the U.S. Open in New York City, and NFL regular-season action is right around the corner.
While these traditions are wonderful, let’s take a look at what the Bible tells us about labor, work, and rest:
Colossians 3:23-24 – “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Exodus 20:9-10 – “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work…“
Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Psalm 128:2 – “For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.“
Matthew 11:28-30 – “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“
To summarize these beautiful truths: to find genuine happiness and fulfillment in your daily routine, do your work as if you are doing it directly for God. Operating with this mindset serves as a powerful witness, reflecting the light of Christ to the coworkers and neighbors around you. Jesus promises to make our heavy burdens light if we choose to partner with Him and learn from Him. That is where true soul-rest is found.
As you enjoy the holiday, I encourage you to take an honest look at your life. Are you working for God, or are you working strictly for yourself? When you shift your focus and labor for the Lord in all things—including your everyday job—you will be amazed at how your perspective changes. Do not let Satan steal your joy or convince you that your efforts do not matter.
If you have been living for yourself, today is the perfect day to start working for God. The very first step is establishing a personal relationship with Him. How is your relationship with the Creator today? Maybe you have never known Him, or perhaps you have allowed your fellowship with Him to drift. There is no better time than right now to renew that bond.
If God is not the top priority in your heart, ask Him to take control today. It is completely free, and He is waiting for you to ask. If you want to return to Him or meet Him for the first time, simply pray and talk to Him. Tell God that you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins on the cross and rose again. Tell Him you are sorry for your mistakes and that you want to start living your life for His glory. He will faithfully forgive you, grant you everlasting life, and place His Holy Spirit deep within your heart. As 1 John 1:9 reassures us: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
