Have you ever thought about the things our mighty God can’t do? When we talk about God, we often describe Him as all-powerful. The Bible teaches that God is indeed omnipotent, meaning He has unlimited power and authority over all creation. In Jeremiah 32:17, the prophet declares, “Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:” From the creation of the universe to the raising of the dead, Scripture shows that God’s power is beyond any human understanding.
Yet the Bible also reveals something interesting: there are certain things God cannot do. These are not weaknesses or failures. Instead, they reflect His perfect nature and holiness. In fact, what God cannot do actually tells us more about who He truly is.
God Cannot Lie.
One clear limit Scripture gives is that God cannot lie. In Titus 1:2 the Bible says, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” Lying is part of human weakness and sin, but it is completely foreign to God’s character. Similarly, Numbers 23:19 declares, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent…” People change their minds, break promises, and twist the truth.
God does not. When God speaks, His word is completely reliable. This “limit” is actually a great comfort. Because God cannot lie, every promise in the Bible can be trusted.
God Cannot Sin.
Another thing God cannot do is sin. Sin is rebellion against God’s holiness, and since God is perfectly holy, He cannot act against His own nature. In James 1:13 we read, “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.” Evil does not attract God or influence Him. His nature is perfectly pure. The prophet Habakkuk also wrote in Habakkuk 1:13, “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity…” God’s holiness means He cannot approve of sin or participate in it.
Again, this limit is not weakness—it is perfection. If God could sin, He would not be the perfect and righteous God we depend on.
God Cannot Deny Himself.
The Bible also teaches that God cannot contradict His own nature or character. In 2 Timothy 2:13, Scripture says, “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” God is always consistent with who He is. He will never stop being holy, loving, just, and faithful. Everything God does flows from His perfect character.
Are These Real Limits?
At first glance, saying God “cannot” do something might sound like a limitation. But these are not restrictions on His power—they are expressions of His perfection. God cannot lie because He is truth. God cannot sin because He is holy. God cannot deny Himself because He is faithful. These “limits” actually reveal His greatness.
The Limits We Place on God.
While God’s nature sets certain moral boundaries, the Bible also teaches that people often place limits on what God can do in their lives. In Psalms 78:41, speaking about the people of Israel, the Bible says, “Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.” God’s power had not changed—but their lack of faith prevented them from experiencing what He wanted to do for them. Their doubt, disobedience, and unbelief restricted the blessings they could receive.
Jesus also encountered this kind of limitation during His earthly ministry. In Matthew 13:58, speaking about His hometown, the Bible says, “And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” Their lack of faith did not remove Christ’s power, but it prevented them from receiving the miracles He was willing to perform.
What This Means for Us.
So, does God have limits? In one sense, yes. God cannot lie, cannot sin, and cannot act against His own perfect nature. But these limits do not weaken Him—they define His holiness and faithfulness. At the same time, the Bible reminds us that people can limit what they experience from God through unbelief and disobedience. When we doubt God’s promises or refuse to trust Him, we close the door on what He wants to do in our lives.
Faith, however, opens that door.
Jesus said in Mark 9:23, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” God’s power has no boundary. His promises never fail. The only question is whether we will trust Him enough to experience what He is able to do. When we place our faith in Him, we discover that the God who cannot lie, cannot sin, and cannot change is the same God who keeps every promise He has ever made.
So, here’s a question: Are you experiencing all the blessings God has to offer, or are you limiting His work in your life? If you’re missing out on the blessings from our Lord, there’s no better time than now to start embracing all that He wants to give you.
All you need is to take a moment to pray… Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes, give you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep within your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;“
May God Bless you. Bob
