Mitch and His Goliath

The sun hung low over the valley of Mitch’s heart, casting long, jagged shadows that looked like monsters. For a long time, Mitch had tried to walk the narrow path, but lately, the terrain felt impossible. He wasn’t facing a literal army, but the silence of the valley was broken by a voice that boomed with the weight of a thousand regrets.
“You’re not good enough,” the voice echoed. “You’ll never change. God can’t use a broken vessel like you.”

Mitch felt small—no, he felt invisible. Like the soldiers of Israel who watched a giant defy their God, Mitch was frozen by the sheer scale of his own fear and shame.
“And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.” — 1 Samuel 17:24
One morning, the weight felt heavy enough to crush him. He cracked open his Bible, his hands trembling. His eyes fell upon a scene in a dusty valley three thousand years old. He saw a shepherd boy standing before a mountain of brass and iron, speaking words that cut through the noise of Mitch’s soul: “The battle is the Lord’s.”
It hit him like a physical blow. The pressure to be “strong enough” suddenly evaporated. If the battle belonged to God, then Mitch didn’t have to carry the sword; he just had to carry the faith.
“Then said David to the Philistine… I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel.” — 1 Samuel 17:45
Mitch realized he had been trying to wear Saul’s armor—trying to use the world’s confidence and his own willpower to fight a spiritual war. It didn’t fit. He shed the heavy plates of “trying harder” and reached for his own sling.
His “smooth stones” weren’t rocks from a brook; they were promises from the Word. Every morning, he picked one up. When the giant shouted, “You’re a failure,” Mitch reached for a stone of Grace. When the giant roared, “It’s impossible,” Mitch gripped a stone of Promise.
He didn’t run away this time. He stepped into the valley of his mind, looked at the towering shadows of his past, and spoke into the wind: “You come to me with shame, but I come to you in the name of the Living God.”
The victory didn’t happen in a single, cinematic crash. It was a series of quiet thuds. Little by little, the voice of accusation grew faint. The giant of fear began to stumble. Mitch realized he wasn’t fighting for a win; he was standing on a victory already won at Calvary.
“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 15:57
As Mitch stood over the remains of his fallen fears, he noticed something beautiful. Other people—friends who were also hiding in the trenches of their own battles—saw him standing tall. His courage became their oxygen. Because Mitch trusted the Giant-Slayer, an entire army began to find their footing again.
The valley was no longer a place of hiding; it was the ground where he had watched God do the impossible.
Application for the Heart:
The Giant is Real, but God is Greater: Whether it’s a habit, a fear, or a memory, your Goliath is outmatched by the Spirit of the Lord (Zechariah 4:6).
Use Your Sling: Don’t try to be anyone else. Use the prayer and the scripture God has put in your hand.
Run Toward the Battle: Faith doesn’t wait for the fear to leave; it moves forward while the heart is still beating fast.
Who or what is your Goliath? It’s time to enlist some help for the battle. Just take a moment and talk to the Lord… Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes, give you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep within your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved“
May God Bless you… Bob
