The Bridge of Grace…

The Bridge of Grace.

The rain fell steadily as Ethan sat alone on a park bench, staring at the dark river flowing beneath the old wooden bridge. Life had not turned out the way he expected. His business had failed, his marriage had ended, and he felt abandoned by everyone he once trusted. “I’ve made too many mistakes,” he muttered. “God couldn’t possibly want anything to do with me.”

Just then, a familiar voice interrupted his thoughts. “Ethan, is that you?”

Ethan looked up and saw his childhood friend, Sarah, holding an umbrella. Standing beside her was Pastor Michael from the local church.

“Ethan!” Sarah said with a smile. “We’ve been worried about you.” Ethan shrugged. “No need to worry. I’m beyond fixing.” Pastor Michael sat down beside him. “You’d be surprised how many people feel that way.” Ethan laughed bitterly. “Maybe. But they haven’t done what I’ve done.” The pastor remained quiet for a moment before speaking.

“Have you ever noticed this bridge?” Ethan glanced at the old structure. “What about it?”

“Years ago,” Pastor Michael said, “a flood nearly destroyed it. Everyone thought it would collapse. But engineers repaired the foundation, strengthened the supports, and today people cross it safely every day.”

Ethan sighed. “What’s that got to do with me?” “Everything,” the pastor replied. “You see yourself as broken beyond repair. God sees someone worth rescuing.” Ethan shook his head. “I don’t believe that.”

Sarah sat beside him. “I used to feel the same way.” Ethan looked at her in surprise. “You?” he asked. She nodded. “After my mother died, I blamed God. I walked away from church and spent years angry and bitter. I thought God was punishing me.”

“What changed?” Sarah smiled gently. “One Sunday, Pastor Michael preached from John 3:16. I’d heard it all my life, but that day it felt personal. ‘For God so loved the world.‘ I realized God wasn’t waiting to punish me. He loved me enough to send Jesus for me.”

Ethan stared at the river. “That’s easy for you to say,” he replied. “You’re a good person.” Pastor Michael chuckled. “Sarah isn’t saved because she’s good. I’m not saved because I’m a pastor. None of us are.”

Ethan frowned. “Then why would God save anyone?” The pastor opened his Bible and handed it to Ethan. “Read John 3:16 and 17.” Ethan read out loud “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Ethan reluctantly read the verses aloud. When he finished, Pastor Michael pointed to a phrase. “‘Whosoever believeth in him.’ Do you know what that means?” Ethan shrugged. “It means anyone. Rich or poor. Young or old. Church member or criminal. It means you.”

The words lingered in Ethan’s mind. “But verse 17 says something else,” Pastor Michael continued. “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” Jesus didn’t come looking for reasons to reject people. He came looking for people to rescue.”

The rain had begun to slow. For several minutes, none of them spoke. Finally, Ethan broke the silence. “I’ve spent years believing God was angry with me.”

“He hates sin,” Pastor Michael said kindly, “but He loves sinners. That’s why Jesus came.” Sarah added, “You don’t have to earn His love. You can’t. It’s a gift.”

Ethan looked again at the bridge. A few moments earlier it had seemed old and worn. Now he noticed the strong beams beneath it and the fresh boards that had replaced the damaged ones. “Like the bridge,” he whispered.

Pastor Michael smiled. “Exactly. Jesus rebuilds what sin has broken.” Tears filled Ethan’s eyes. “What if I’ve waited too long?”

“You haven’t,” said Sarah. “You are breathing,” Pastor Michael added. “That means God’s grace is still reaching for you.”

The clouds began to part, and a ray of sunlight broke through the gray sky. For the first time in years, Ethan felt a flicker of hope. “What do I do?” he asked.

Pastor Michael gently replied, “Believe in the One God sent. Trust Jesus Christ as your Savior.” There on that rainy afternoon, beside the old bridge, Ethan bowed his head. His prayer was simple. “Lord, I’ve failed. I’ve sinned. But I believe Jesus died for me and rose again. Please forgive me and save me.”

When he lifted his head, the burden he had carried for years seemed lighter. The circumstances of his life had not instantly changed. His problems were still real. But something inside him was different.

For the first time, he understood John 3:16-17. God’s love was greater than his failures. God’s grace was stronger than his guilt. And Jesus had not come to condemn him—but to save him.

As the three friends walked across the bridge together, Ethan smiled. He finally knew that he was not crossing alone.

Has the burden of this life gotten you down? Does it seem like God is against you? God still loves you and wants to help you. Like Ethan, take a moment right now and talk to Him. Tell God you believe His Son, Jesus, paid for your sins and rose from the grave. Let Him know you’re sorry and want to live for Him. He will forgive your sins, grant you everlasting life with Him, and place His Spirit deep in your heart. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” and Romans 10:9 tells us, ”that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

May God Bless you… Bob
