Father’s Day is next Sunday June 18th. Father’s Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, and a number of other countries around the world. We customarily honor our dads with a gift, maybe a meal and spending time with them. For some of us it’s a day to remember our Fathers that have passed away. Let’s talk a little about Father’s Day.
The first known Father’s Day service occurred in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, after hundreds of men died in the worst mining accident in U.S. history. The Sunday service happened because of the efforts of Grace Golden Clayton. Mrs. Clayton wanted to honor the many fathers who had died in the mining explosion, which killed more than 360 men and boys, and left about 1,000 children fatherless. Although the Fairmont service was the first known to honor fathers, it did not turn into an annual event, nor was the idea promoted.
Several other people across the nation had similar ideas throughout the years, but Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd is credited for being the one to popularize it, starting events that led to Father’s Day becoming a U.S. national holiday.
Mrs. Dodd proposed to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA that they celebrate a “Father’s Day.”She chooses the 5th of June because it was her father’s birthday.
The idea received strong support, but the good ministers of Spokane asked that the day be changed to give them extra time to prepare sermons on the unexplored subject of fathers. The first Father’s Day in Spokane, Washington, was observed on June 19, 1910 (the third Sunday in June) and became an annual event there. Soon, other towns had their own celebrations.
In spite of widespread support, Father’s Day did not become a permanent national holiday for many years. The first bill was introduced in Congress in 1913, but in spite of encouragement by President Woodrow Wilson, it did not pass. In 1966, Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation designating the third Sunday in June to honor fathers.
Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that Father’s Day be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. It has been an official, permanent national holiday ever since.
Father’s Day is a day children show their love and appreciation for good ole Dad. As for us Fathers, it’s a day to show love to our children and take pride in what they have accomplished in their lives. As for an adopted Dad or a Stepfather, it’s also a day to celebrate your love for an adopted or stepchild, just as a biological father would.
We have another Father, that’s our Heavenly Father… We are children of God. We have been adopted into God’s family. In John 1:12 we find this verse “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:” Have you ever really thought about being adopted into God’s Family. In Galatians 3:26 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Think about that… How great is that!!!
Here’s my question to you… Are you going to celebrate and honor God this Father’s Day? Are you an adopted son or daughter of God? Do you know your Heavenly Father? If so, how’s your relationship with God? God wants to adopt you into His heavenly family and is waiting for you to ask. There’s no better time than the present.
In closing, none of us is guaranteed another hour on earth. How’s your relationship with God? Maybe you never had a relationship with our heavenly Father, or maybe your fellowship isn’t as good as it once was. Remember, none of us is guaranteed another second on this earth.
Please… if you don’t know Christ or are not sure about your relationship with God, please pray… Tell God you believe His Son Jesus paid for your sins and rose again. Tell God you are sorry and want to start Living for Him. He will forgive your sins and mistakes and give you Everlasting Life with Him… and place His Spirit deep within your heart. In 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” Also in Romans 10:9 the Bible tells us,” That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;“
